Imagine never having to call a business again. That’s exactly what Google’s new “Ask for Me” feature is bringing to life. This AI-powered tool makes phone calls to local businesses on your behalf. Need to check appointment availability at a nail salon or see if an auto shop can fit you in? Google’s AI assistant can handle it for you.
Once you enable the experiment on Google Search Labs, you might see an “Ask for Me” prompt when searching for local nail salons or auto repair shops. Select it, and Google will ask a few questions—like whether you need an oil change or tire rotation, what type of car you have, and when you’d like to book. You’ll also need to enter your email or phone number to receive updates about your request. Quartz explains the details here.
This isn’t Google’s first attempt at AI making phone calls. Back in 2018, it introduced Duplex, an AI that booked reservations and appointments over the phone. “Ask for Me” builds on that concept, aiming to make these interactions even smoother.
Of course, with great power comes great responsibility. Google has added safeguards so businesses aren’t bombarded with calls—each AI-placed call clearly announces itself, and businesses can opt out of receiving them if they prefer.
As this feature rolls out, it could change how we interact with local businesses. No more waiting on hold. No more calling during limited business hours. Your AI assistant does the work.
