But how would this work? Altman’s vision includes a unique solution—a 2.5% tax on wealth generated by AI systems. The revenue could fund regular cash payments to individuals, helping to ensure economic stability even as industries transform.
Of course, not everyone is convinced. Critics argue that while AI might create massive wealth, implementing and sustaining a fair tax system would be a monumental challenge. Additionally, some worry that UBI alone isn’t enough to address the societal shifts AI could trigger.

As Altman puts it, “AI’s wealth generation potential is unprecedented. The question is, how do we ensure it benefits everyone?”
